I’m making my way through the first season of “Picard” on Blu-ray, and reached the episode where Hugh was reintroduced. I wanted to revisit the character’s introduction before continuing with that re-watch.
It’s a tremendous episode that speaks as directly as any to Trek’s core ethos of empathy, tolerance, and bridging divides. Jonathan Del Arco gives a performance with enormous humanity despite the severe restrictions of his prosthetics and the Borg’s lack of expressiveness.
It’s also the rare episode where Guinan has a character arc and moral development, rather than facilitating the character arcs and moral development of others. Both her and Picard were traumatized by the Borg, and both of them are ultimately able to move past that trauma and those biases to do the right thing.
